Choosing a general contractor is the most important step in any minor or major construction or remodeling project.  Word of mouth referrals and seeing other completed jobs should be essential in making your decision.  Referring to the Better Business Bureau for any negative reports is also something you should do.   Remember that your contractor will be in your home until the job is completed and you need to feel confident that they are respecting your property as if it were their own.
Most importantly, make sure that the general contractor you choose carries all the required liability and workers compensation insurance as well as licensed in the fields of work they are performing. This protects your home as well as the contractor
